Congratulations to Brandon Baseman, newly placed with SP+ (the leading provider of parking facilities and related services in the United States).
Brandon was most recently the National Negotiator for the National Treasury Employees Union in Washington, DC. This move to SP+ is a return home to the Chicago area for Brandon, who is licensed to practice law in Illinois and received his JD in 2012 from DePaul.
At SP+, Brandon’s role will expand to include a complete range of union and non-union related employment law responsibilities.
Evers Legal thanks SP+ for retaining our firm to handle this placement.
Congratulations to Julia Pilliod, appointed to the position of Assistant General Counsel with Ubiquiti Networks (UBNT). Ubiquiti Networks is a publicly traded fast growing international company, offering a broad range of internet access and networking products including video security, routers, innovative wi-fi solutions and more.
Julia will focus primarily on managing litigation. She brings best practices experience to bear on that task, after serving as head of litigation for The Warranty Group from 2005 through to that company’s acquisition by Assurant last year. Her experience also includes a heavy dose of compliance and risk management.
Evers Legal is grateful to Ubiquiti Networks for retaining our firm to handle the search for this newly created position.
I am very pleased to relay a nice outcome that originated with our Adjunct Counsel service offering. Greg Lacey was on assignment through our firm with client Adtalem (the leader in for-profit education services). Greg is a former Partner with Dykema Gossett; he is a stellar employment attorney and litigator. Towards the end of Greg’s assignment, he interviewed for a direct hire position with Adtalem and was recently hired. Congratulations Greg!
While we are always careful to never promise direct hire employment as a possible outcome when an attorney works on-site as one of our Adjunct Counsel… “conversions” to direct hire are indeed win-win outcomes for all involved when they occur. That’s why we endeavor to provide permanent placement caliber attorneys for all of our Adjunct Counsel assignments.
Thank you, Greg. Thank you, Adtalem. Mike Evers
In-house attorneys: We recommend a NAMWOLF event at the Metropolitan Club on July 12. Joel Stern is presenting. Details and to rsvp: CLE Diversity and Inclusion
Curt Kramer has been named Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Navistar International (NYSE: NAV), effective April 1 upon the retirement of Steve Covey. Steve spent 36 years with Navistar, including the last 13 as General Counsel. I thank Steve for making Navistar one of our first Fortune 500 clients almost 20 years ago. We had the privilege of handling the search that resulted in Curt’s placement at Navistar in 2002.
Curt started at Navistar with the title Senior Attorney, and he has successfully climbed every step up the law department ladder. It was an ascent that, by my count, included at least four title changes (most recently Associate GC and Corporate Secretary).
In our upcoming March 18 issue of “Evers eNews,” my Culture Fit column title is “Musical Chairs” and I talk about the frequency with which GC’s tend to move around these days. Steve Covey and Curt Kramer are proof that doing great work, building relationships, treating your team members well, navigating corporate changes, and always showing loyalty… remains a formula that works too. Congratulations Curt! I am very happy for you, and I appreciate your support over the years. Curt participated on a panel I put together for the In-house Innovates conference a few months ago. I am not supposed to play favorites, but you are indeed at the top of my list… I am grateful that our paths crossed early in our respective careers.
A quick thank you as well to Bob Perna. Bob was the General Attorney (really an Assistant GC title for Navistar) who hired Curt in 2002. Although Steve kindly gave our firm the thumbs up to engage with Navistar, I worked most closely with Bob on that search, and he was very generous in his support of our efforts. Bob has been a General Counsel for several years now and currently sits in the big chair for Rockwell Collins.
Please note that this year’s Inhouse Innovates series in Chicago (also and formerly known as the Inside Counsel “Superconference”), previously scheduled for May, is locked down now for Nov. 15 – 16. There was a change in ownership and the conference is now run by American Lawyer Media. The move to November has given ALM time to put its unique stamp on the conference and I’m excited to experience their approach.
I am pleased to be one of the panel moderators, and I hope you mark your calendar for the event. If you previously received a Complimentary Conference Pass from Evers Legal for May, you are automatically registered for November and will receive notice of this (ping me if you don’t). If you are not registered and wish to attend, let me know. Depending on eligibility requirements, I may be able to assist with a conference pass or at least a discount. Mike
Our bi-monthly eNews features a Counsel Q&A profile — these have been very well received. General Counsel and other senior level in-house participants have enjoyed the feedback from friends and colleagues. The process is fun and painless, handled by expert journalist Cate Flahardy. It is also a positive way to raise one’s online profile. Thus far, I have extended invites to participate privately and individually. We have a couple of openings left in 2016, and I would like to widen the proverbial net. I welcome recommendations. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at 312-225-1144 to recommend a colleague (or yourself) for a Counsel Q&A. We do reserve the right to accept or decline recommendations. Let me hear from you! Best regards, Mike Evers

Friends of our firm are likely familiar with the annual Inside Counsel “Superconference.” American Lawyer Media has acquired the conference rights and is growing it to four regional conferences re-titled, “In-house Innovates.” I am pleased to bridge this transition and return as a moderator. On May 10, I will moderate the panel, “GC & CFO: Managing Corporate Risk as Partners.” Details to come. I encourage you to visit the conference site and consider attending: https://www.eiseverywhere.com/ehome/156979/agenda/
